When the steam powered printing press was invented in 1843, false teaching and false prophets were given the one thing that they needed to deceive the Body of Christ. It made their profane theology available to the average person, and their books crept into seminaries everywhere. It spread corruption far and wide, to every part of the earth.
Before the printing press, Christians only had the Bible to rely upon – with the guidance of the Holy Spirit. It was too difficult and expensive for ill-conceived commentary to get very far. And now, with the Internet, corrupt ideas spread at the speed of light.

A friend of mine mentioned to me once, that I was a Biblicist. And, I was confused by that, since I thought that all Christians should be devout followers of what the Bible actually says. But, the more I talked with fellow believers, the more surprised I was that devotion to the words of God was so rare.
How is it possible to follow Christ, and not be devoted to the words of the Bible?
I am truly amazed at this, and it took me a while to see how our current situation came to be. And, it started with the steam-powered printing press. More specifically it was the steam powered rotary printing press, invented by Richard March Hoe in 1843.
That press allowed writers to print books faster and cheaper than ever before. It made printing less labor-intensive, and cheaper books gave the average person the chance to read what the writers were writing. And, it’s little wonder that some of the biggest religious movements had their origins around that time.
In fact, let me throw out a few.
Religious Movements
All of the following religious movements have their roots in the 1800s:
- Dispensationalism
- Charismatic Movement
- Seventh Day Adventism
- Jehovah’s Witnesses
- Christian Science
- The Bahai
- Landmarkism
- Reform and Conservative Judaism
- New Apostolic Church
- Secular Zionism
- Salvation Army
- Ordo Templi Orientis
- Plymouth Brethren
- Mormonism
- Millerism
- Christian Israelite Church
- Modern Theosophy
THAT is just the stuff that I could think of off the top of my head. Some of the above is pure heresy – others, less so. Some may not be heretical at all. In fact, I can personally attest to the fact that more than one of those is NOT heretical (although, maybe somewhat foolish).
Take the Jehovah’s Witnesses. That group rose out of the 1870s. There’s no way that they could have had ANY HOPE of success without the industrial printing press.
And, most of you know that I have a ‘bone to pick’ with Dispensationalism. THAT heresy would have been impossible without technological innovation in the printing industry.
It Didn’t Need To Be This Way
The thing that gets me is that all of this heresy was just so unnecessary. All that we needed to do, to fight off these heretical ideas is to stick to the Bible. And, I am shocked at how reluctant people are to just read their Bibles.
That is literally all that you need to do, to fight off the false teachers and false prophets. Just. Read. Your. Bible.
Why is this so hard?
Well Actually, It Did
But, Jesus said that this would happen:
And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many.
– Matthew 24:11
Jesus knew that this was going to happen, so there’s no way around what we are experiencing now. In fact, it will get worse. Much worse.
So, my prescription to you is to get rid of your commentaries and read you Bible. Read all of it. From Genesis to Revelation. And, do it in a year. Every year.
I have been reading my Bible through for decades, and it has been an immense blessing. In fact, it rescued me from a lot of error. And, I want YOU to be rescued from an errors that you might have.
In the dark days ahead, we will need to be guided by the Holy Spirit, if we are to have ANY hope of survival. But, how are you going to be guided by the Holy Spirit, if you aren’t reading the precious words of God?
Please. Commit to reading your Bible. Commit to reading all of it.
