People need to wake up, and I don’t know what it will take for them to do that. But, I believe that he first step is to stop doing the thing that is putting you to sleep.
We talk about drinking the Kool-Aid. That was a reference to the Jonestown Massacre – where followers of Jim Jones drank cyanide-laced Kool-Aid. But, there’s more than just poisoned Kool-Aid.
Lots of Christians are sitting around the punch bowl, not realizing the potency of what they are drinking. And, what’s in that bowl is designed to keep you from realizing just how intoxicating it is.
Just like a Hairy Buffalo.

That Hairy Buffalo
When I was in college, a friend of mine was a member of a fraternity, and they threw a lot of parties. One day, as Bob and I went into the frat house to get something from his room, we walked past a large punch bowl, filled with something that looked a lot like… fruit punch.
Bob said, “Put your nose down there and smell that.”
So, I did.
I didn’t really smell anything at all, other than something vaguely fruity, so I just looked at him.
He said, “That’s a Hairy Buffalo, and it’s almost pure alcohol.”
Bob went on to explain how they made it, and why. Apparently, the goal was to put as much alcohol into the drink, in such a way that you do not know that you are drinking that much alcohol. The goal was to get you intoxicated without you realizing it.
He also described how they made ‘electric jello’, which was the same idea, but with Jello. However, they made it with ‘Everclear’. Again, the point was to make you drunk, before you realized it.
And, since these were guys… you can understand who they wanted to get drunk.
By the way, this was the mid-’80s. Think about how bad it is NOW.
The problem is that our society is full of these ‘frat boys’, who are trying to get you to drink their Harry Buffaloes and Electric Jello. It looks fine and normal, but it’s not. It’s full of stuff that will make you drunk and put you to sleep.
It’s in the news, the movies and the songs. Every time you turn on the radio or the television, you are getting Hairy Buffaloes. When that catchy tune gets stuck in your head, you’ve been caught by a Hairy Buffalo.
Please, turn off the popular culture and start reading your Bible. Every day. All of it. Someone once said that you can read the whole Bible in 88 hours. That’s only a few minutes every day.
We are called by Christ, in Luke 21:36, to watch and pray. Paul spoke of the need to be sober. And no, he was NOT talking about alcohol. He was talking about not indulging in the cares of this world – about being serious.
If Christ saved you from an eternity in Hell… my hope is that you will devote your life to Christ. That means being grateful enough to make His words the center of your life.
And, you can’t do that, if you are drinking Hairy Buffaloes.
I truly hope that you’ll be ready for this
