At War With Gog and Magog

The current unrest in the Ukraine is interesting. The CIA has been involved in fomenting revolutions on the periphery of Russia and throughout the Middle East over the last few years. And, the riots in Kiev smell strongly of American efforts to destabilize a country that is edging away from Europe/NATO and closer and closer to Russia. But, there’s a lot more to this story than just US meddling in the affairs of others. There’s a Biblical element to this.

In the Bible, the Ukraine is mentioned in Ezekiel as Rosh:

Son of man, set thy face toward Gog, of the land of Magog, the prince of Rosh, Meshech, and Tubal, and prophesy against him,Ezekiel 38:2 (ASV)

Or, is it?

You see, the King James Version translates it this way:

Son of man, set thy face against Gog, the land of Magog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal, and prophesy against him,Ezekiel 38:2 (KJV)

What’s the difference?

It’s the word chief – or, more specifically, the Hebrew word rosh. And, as a moderate speaker of Hebrew, the King James Version gets it wrong. The King James claims that the Hebrew word rosh is an adjective, but Hebrew is very specific when it comes to adjectives, unlike English. If rosh was supposed to be an adjective, the Hebrew for chief prince would be:

נשיא ראשי

But, the prophet Ezekiel wrote it like this:

נשיא ראש

Do you see the difference?

Yeah, it’s this character:

That’s a yood, and it should appear at the end of rosh (Hebrew is written right-to-left), if it was a modifier of nasi (prince). Also, nasi ALREADY means chief prince. In fact, it’s the word used in Israel to indicate the President. Obama is the nasi of America. Putin is the nasi of Russia.

Hmmmm… Putin, the nasi of Russia… Could he be Gog?

We’ll find out when the time comes.

(I wasn’t originally going to give you a Hebrew lesson, but I had forgotten this bit of controversy with the KJV and felt the need to discuss it.)

The word rosh is obviously a proper noun – meaning, it’s a name – and, it fits very nicely with the original name for the Ukraine – Rus. (Hebrew is very malleable in terms of pronunciation.)

What does this mean?

It means that the attempt by the US via the CIA to drag the Ukraine away from Russia is going to fail. The Ukraine will be (and must be) in the Gog and Magog coalition that comes down to attack Israel.

Furthermore, I believe that this attempt by the Central Intelligence Agency to meddle in Russian affairs will cause even more upset in the Kremlin. In fact, this might be yet another hook in the jaws of Gog.

We will see how all of this comes together. Just keep an eye out for events in Kiev. Things could get very, very ugly there. Very ugly.

‘Gog and Magog’ is coming, and a lot will happen in the Middle East and the rest of the world. When this conflict happens, fire will rain down on those who dwell carelessly. And that sounds an awful lot like a massive solar flare.

Are you ready for this?

  1. Magog is Turkey and the Caucuses. Russia Israelite. Jews are from Turkey/Khazaria/Magog. Jews are already in Palestine. Gog has already conquered Palestine. Hal Lindsey is so behind research. Time to do your own studying.

    • Hi Carol Elmer,

I’m having trouble understanding where you’re coming from.

I’ve spent two decades studying the region and learning the language – 15 of those years in Israel itself.

Where do you get all this?

      Yours in Christ,

  2. John, in the article, the first verse reads “set thy face toward Gog”, and the second reads “set thy face against Gog”. Is there any difference to the interpretation of these two verses, regarding the words towards and against? Thanks for the insight. And thank you for your site. I read it every day, and I am so thankful that you share your faith and wisdom.

    • Hi Terry Nabower,

Hmmm… Good observation. I missed that.

Actually, I think that the ASV has the better translation here, assuming that my understanding of Hebrew is good. The word ‘toward’ there is spelled with an ‘aleph-lamed’, and it really does mean ‘to’ or ‘toward’. Translating the original word into ‘against’ may be something more… old English.

      Thanks for that comment, Terry!

      Yours in Christ,

      John Little

  3. … so glad to have come in contact with your website and enjoy your perspective on all this. In regard to the possible solar flare judgement I might also suggest a nuclear confrontation, as Saudi Arabia has made threats about the games and this could become another proxy war ostensibly with Syria as a trigger.

    • Hey Jennifer Updegraff,

It’s interesting that you would mention that. It certainly is possible, but I find myself struggling to ignore that possibility.

It distresses me to see that I still want to hold onto that false sense of ‘normalcy’ that I grew up with. There’s still that part of me that wants to roll back time to my childhood in the ’70s.

      Thanks for that observation, Jennifer!

      Yours in Christ,

      John Little

  4. Mr. Little, Very good article, and sometimes when things are happening half way around the world, we just don’t think about them. I am not sure how old you are? I believe you grew up in the heartland? If you are old enough to remember we were trained to get under our desk when the nukes hit? They did train us that way, but we were always raised to believe that we have never in truth been attacked, and we sit isolated on many waters. I honestly believe a Solar flare or an EMP is coming? I have through the years have read and heard another rendering of these scriptures in Ezekiel 39, which deal with living carelessly in the isles? When the Ezekiel 38-39 invasion takes place on Israel, we know that the Lord gets the Glory. The scenario that I have heard is that when the invasion is happening that this coalition wants to take out the strong man? The US throughout her revived history as helped Israel, but by all indications we are hanging her out to dry? So when this exchange happens the US is attacked as they move toward Israel. You know far more Hebrew than me? I have heard two words discussed in Ezekiel 39 that deal with the words carelessly and isles. The Hebrew word betach? which means living with a false sense of security, and isles means a coastland people. I believe America fulfills this scripture almost exactly. It will never happen here? Have you ever heard anything like that? God Bless, Jimmy

    • Hey Jimmy,

Thankfully, I am young enough to never have had to go through nuclear attack drills. We had plenty of tornadoes to worry about in Indiana – without the added Russian nukes.

I think that you have the right idea about the word ‘betach’ (‘ch’ as in ‘Bach’). It’s a pretty widely used word that connotes security, certainty – even insurance. For instance, all the intelligence agencies are under a single umbrella called the Shrutei Bitachon K’lalli, which is usually shortened to ‘Shin Bet’ or ‘Shabak’. That word ‘Bitachon’ is a variation of the word ‘betach’.

So, I think that the ‘security’ might be real in human terms – just not in ‘God terms’. The other thing is that North America really is something of a large island. And, THAT made me think.

That solar flare/emp has me worried for all who live in the US.

      Great comment, as always.

  5. I’ve really enjoyed reading your blog since I first came across it several months ago. Bible prophecy and end-time events interest me in that I am concerned with how Christians today are spiritually prepared (matured) for what is to come. I am currently reading a book called “The Sign” by Robert Van Kampen where he goes into great technical detail to identify the modern day countries and people groups who may be involved in end-times bible prophecy. While I don’t necessarily agree with everything he writes, what I would like to point out is that he comes to different conclusions about who Rosh is (Germanic areas of western Russia). He also believes the Ukraine is the biblical “Gomer”. Be that as it may, my point is that when it comes to bible prophecy and future end-time events, there is much speculation and difference of opinion involved by even the most sincere and well-meaning of bible students and teachers. I would therefore urge caution and restraint in making such declarative statements as “In Ezekiel, the Ukraine is mentioned as Rosh.” Furthermore, Rus (original name for Ukraine) = Rosh sounds good but may or may not be the case – neither I or you know for sure.

    • Hi Joel,

Very good points. It is possible that Rosh could be someone else, but I believe that to be unlikely.

I really do believe that the evidence points to the Ukraine as Rosh. And, I do not believe that I’m doing readers a service by entertaining other theories. Our current culture demands that my articles be less than a thousand words, ideally between 300 and 600. If I was writing a book, I would certainly consider looking at other theories as to who Rosh is. (It is, after all, a fascinating issue.)

In the final analysis, I’m not sure that it is necessary to worry about the identity of the ancillary members of the Gog coalition. The fact that the conditions are clearly forming for the coming of Gog and Magog… well, that should be enough to concentrate our attention on preparing for what is coming.

Joel, it’s great to have you on board and asking insightful questions. Keep up the good work.

      Yours in Christ,

      John Little

      • Excellent points and well taken. Current events certainly do seem to be aligning according to biblical prophecy. Let us all pray for one another that we will stand strong in the Lord and the power of His might.

  6. Joel,

Ukraine was called Rus’! Then Rus’-Ukraine Not Rosh! I am Ukrainian ! I think I know . I am also a Ukrainian Catholic! But I hear about the End Times ! No one knows but the Father!

    • Hi Adam Kacsur,

First of all, we are talking about Hebrew, not Ukrainian. In Hebrew, the character ‘Shin’ (ש) can either have an ‘s’ sound or an ‘sh’ sound.

Second, the descendants of Rosh (ראש) – who was a person – may have changed the pronunciation of over several thousand years to Rus. This happens all the time. Just take a look at Hebrew and Arabic.

Third, we are ALL called to watch and wait for the end times. All of us (Luke 21:36). The only reference to ‘the Father’ in this case is the day and the hour – that’s it. (Matt 24:36, Mark 13:32)

Thank you for your comment, Adam.

      Yours in Christ,

      John Little

  7. Interesting.

what are you guys opinions on turks? do you beleive turks want to fight you? or are you aware that the turkish government has been British – Zionist for over a hundred years now?
mustafa kemal of the so-called young turks were crypto – zionists. not neceseraily jewish or hebrew.

all politics, banks, nations, relegions, etc are created by man himself. would you agree or disagree?

    many thanks.

    • Hi kadir,

I’m afraid that I don’t have much of an opinion about Turkey, one way or another. Although, I HAVE spent quite a bit of time there, off and on.

However, I do NOT agree that they have been British-Zionist for over a hundred years. Nor are they crypto-zionists. Although, I would welcome the thought that they might be Zionist, but it is clear to me that they aren’t.

Nor do I agree that all politics, banks, nations, religions, etc are created by man. God created Christianity, and God created Israel. He also brought about the formation of modern Israel in fulfillment of Ezekiel 36 and 37.

I’m afraid that we are worlds apart in our view of things, Kadir. But, I thank you for your comment.

      Yours in Christ,

      John Little
